Wii love Zelda!

Well, its been a long time since i last made a blog post. My excuse? Its just too easy to do nothing.

In fact, that reminds me; If you think that life is hard, it would have been far easier to have never been born.

Anyway, onto the subject of my post: GAMES. Wii games to precise.

My younger sister recently got a Nintendo Wii as a sort of late Christmas present because they were so unnavailable last year. So, inevitably, I had a few games with it. It takes quite a bit of getting used to. Its really unlike any other game system I've ever played. Now, the Wiimote is a pointing device, like a mouse, but its entirely 3d, and you can also swing it like a bat as well. Its a really weird sensation the first few times.

Now, games for the Wii. I'll admit it straight off; I haven't spent much time with any of the games as yet. But first impressions are what count right? The first Wii game I played was Wii Sports, its included with the console, free, so why not try it out? The only one i've tried so far is the Wii tennis. And its quite a blast, although a little hard to controll really. You would think you would just swing it like a tennis racket right? But the Wiimote is far more sensitive than that; it only requires the slightest of touches to make a big swing. So while, in RL, your movements are perfectly correct to time your hit of the ball, in WiiSport:Tennis you're swinging wildly too early and missing regularly.

Its definately more of a vague outline of motion than a direct 1 to 1 relationship in movements.

Ah, Zelda, though, thats great.Zelda: Twilight Princess to give the full name. I haven't got very far yet. But its really fun. Sword slashes only actualy take a light wrist movement to complete, and the slighshot is easier to aim and fire with on the Wii than the Gamecube IMO. It doesn't take the motion stuff that far, but what it does use it for is well implemented.

Graphics wise, of course, everything on the Wii is a long way from either 360 or PS3. The Wii itself is really just an upgraded Gamecube thats been downsized. Not that thats a bad thing, but the look often pales campared to the blazing awesomeness of PGR3.

More on Zelda though: in this day and age, its not very often that you find a game that has such little audible dialogue, least of all a console game. Characters only make various grunts, groans and yells as you talk to them and the actual dialogue is all text. Its so weird. On the N64, you could have forgiven them, perhaps on GC, as the storage medium is small; But Wii uses DVD9, that has tons of space for dialogue. Oblivion (x360, on DVD9 format) has tens of thousands of lines of dialouge.

I can't help but feel that having a GC version of this game, and/or trying to stick to the traditional Zelda formula, has held this game back. Because, honestly, having to read text is distracting from the actual visual drama of the game itself.

I've experienced this effect to a lesser degree in an XBox/PC game: Star Wars: Kights of the Old Republic. I originally had the subtitles turned on all the time, and I found myself just reading along with the dialogue and ignoring the actual visual part of the conversation. It really is a bit of a waste of the developers time that way. So I turned off the subtitles, and suddenly every conversation was that much more engaging, I suddenly saw the visual clues of how a character was feeling. It was a much better experience.

Hmm, perhaps that means Twilight Princess's characters just aren't all that interesting? Or the developers suck at signing good voice actors? I don't know. But dialogue issues aside, it is a fun game. Dialogue isn't a focus for Z:TW that much anyway i suppose; bashing monsters with a sword is though.

And no, I didn't write this whole thing in 1 minute since my last entry! I've had this for a while.

Anyone else think this is kinda stupid? Well, I'll just repost what I said over at Major's:

You do realise what this is don't you?

Charging for game tips.

Like back in the old school days where there was a premium rate number to call for game tips.

But this is now, not the 1990s (or even, *gasp* the 80s).

The Internet revolution is still going strong the amount of free game tips made out of real gamers own knowledge has all but made this type of content obsolete. And not just that, general shared knowledge for free as well; Wikipedia anyone?

Not only are the cog tags incredibly easy to find anyway, (gears isn't a particularly big playing world, and they aren't very well hidden most of the time), but content that does exactly the same thing as this has been around almost as long as the game itself.

There text guides, audio guides and video guides, they are abundant and incredibly easy to find.

This content doesn't really have any worth to anyone either, as far as i can see.

Time wise: opening a new tab and a quick search on google for "gears of war cog tags location" yeilded a perfectly accurate text-based result in less than 20 seconds. I bet the time take taken to download the videos is far longer than that, even on a REALLY fast connection.

And money wise, well: this content costs and 500points. On the web it is free.

You really need to remove that 'micro' bit from the whole 'microtransactions' slogan. Its just false advertising now.

Sorry to rant on your blog Major! :)
